It is very difficult to obtain a new account now if you are a foreigner/student/new to this country.

I am glad I got mine in 98 and still enjoy loads of goodies from the bank in similar lines to those locals.

BTW, which bank was that?

I had a lot of difficulties back in 2000. They wanted to see this lah, that lah... my dad had to beg Maybank in Malaysia to write a reference letter ("My son in London no money already!". And to think all you want is a place to put YOUR money.
jon: lol yeah i know how hard it is. but i got my normal savings acct just 2 days upon arriving in uk. hsbc.
lucky me.. but the upgrade is gone bonkers they said i have to wait another 6 months to see if i get a credit rating. i'll be trying to get natwest maybe later this week.

Try Natwest.

I used to help new Chinese students and although most of them wanted HSBC (probably because of the chinese name), the bank would brush them away and ask them to come back in a year.

Natwest is pretty okay about it although the students still had to wait for a year to get a debit card (cash machine card is okay).

Good luck!

i hate my kindle

- reason being i can't put it down when i start a book. and it doesn't make it any better that i can put so many books in there.. OMG.. i can just continue reading.. so far i've used the kindle for like 2 weeks ? or maybe a week.. since i hate it.. i'll say only the bad things i can find about it.. 1. erm.. when eating do not read. - makes it hard to wipe the oil stains off. nothing a cloth wouldn't wipe away. or maybe the hem of your shirt. 2. to jump flip the pages is a little hard. it's made for sequential reading. 3. dictionary is a little hard to use.. it doesn't let you highlight the word and checks it in the dictionary. 4. collections.. i have a few books which i loaded on it. but to actually navigate through them takes some time as i can't seem to organise my books via any book management tool. meaning they can't group the books by folder. kindle just shows everything in one big list. 5. it looks so cool that most of the time when i am readin...
